What’s in a name?

May 23rd, 2006

So why are we calling it Sutori? As you might imagine, there’s a story behind it — lots of stories actually:

  • Post a story
  • Read a story
  • Vote on a story
  • Explore stories

The site we’re building is all about stories and we wanted its name to reflect that. The word “sutori” is a phoentical translation of the word “story” into Japanese (although we took the liberty of removing a dash from the original su-tori).

Why Japanese? Well . . . why not?

Plus because it sounds alot like story. Maybe it can be a new noun. You can post a sutori, explore sutories, read sutories, vote on sutories.

    hm…

Naming was an interesting process. As with most good ideas, “Sutori” was suggested early on, but in the interests of democracy the team members spent a fair amount of time brainstorming other ideas and voting for their favourites. Other suggestions included “The Conch”, “The New Customer” and “Podium”, but “Sutori” was the clear winner.

My favorite was “customr” ala Flickr, but that’s a little hokey :)
