Products vs. experiences

People ask me all the time how Sutori is different from customer review sites like Epinions or some of the more interesting newcomers like Stylehive or ThisNext.

We Sutori-heads are big fans of peer-to-peer reviews in general (customer power! right on!) and those last two sites in particular, but there are some big differences between them and Sutori.

Perhaps the biggest of these differences can be boiled down to the title of this post: products vs. experiences.

Now of course, finding the best products is a vital part of life as customer. But it’s only one part. There are so many other aspects of the overall experience that make us happy or unhappy customers.

In other words, it’s often more about HOW someone sells you something than WHAT they actually sell you.

Think of your own life. Think of the last three or four times you opened up your wallet. What left the biggest impression? Was it the thing you were paying for or something else?

Now quick . . . hold that thought and go post a story!

New feature . . . official company responses

The ultimate aim of Sutori is for stories from real customers to reach the ears of the companies those stories are about. And for that connection to to ultimately lead to some sort of positive change (problems solved, better policies, better products etc.).
With this in mind, we’ve added a new feature that allows companies to post and official response to any story. These responses are similar to comments, except they will be clearly marked as officially coming from the company involved.

Here’s how it works.

Beneath each story and above the comments, we’ve added this . . .

Click on the link text (”I am authorized . . .”) and we’ll ask you a few questions so we can confirm that you are who you say you are.

Once that application is received and your identification is confirmed, you’ll be able to post a response right there on the story page.

Simple as that.

So . . . who’ll be the first company to join the conversation?

Walls and silos

There’s an interesting article over at Guardian Unlimited about how big companies are beginning to listen to bloggers and other sources of online buzz. My favorite quote comes from Max Kalehoff of Nielsen BuzzMetrics:

“Most Fortune 1000 companies are not of the cultural mindset where they talk directly to their customers . . . They’ve built so many walls and silos that they’ve lost that direct communication.”

Walls and silos.

The goal of Sutori is to make is to weaken those walls and silos and open up direct communication again. More talking on listening on both sides of the wall . . . for the benefit of everyone involved.

The Sutori badge is here

Yep, we’ve got ourselves a badge. Slip a simple line of javascript code into any web page and . . . voila! A handy little badge displaying your stories.

Here’s what mine looks like in the sidebar or my personal blog:

This is just a first iteration. It’s pretty basic and comes in one flavour only–one that I should point out is best viewed on pages with a light background (black text).

Stay tuned for a new version with more bells, whistles and options in the coming weeks.

To get your badge, log into Sutori and make your way to Your Stories > Display your stories on your website.

Sutori went to Barcamp

So I was able to squeeze onto the agenda and show Sutori off to my fellow particpants at BarCamp Vancouver this past weekend.

In the end I decided to abandon my slides and just show people Sutori and let their questions quide the discussion. They were a very smart and very forgiving audience, and before the day was done I had tons of great comments and suggestions to chew on.

Here’s a photo snapped by cathycracks of me presenting and making some sort of odd, bird-like hand gesture.

Sutori-head at BarCamp Vancouver

I’ll be at the first BarCamp Vancouver tonight and tomorrow talking about Sutori to anyone who’ll listen.
I may be doing a short presentation about Sutori if I can get on the schedule.

I’m planning on wearing my Sutori tee all day Saturday so I should be easy to spot. If you see me, say “hello”.
